Roulette Variations Explained

Roulette is a popular casino game and every land-based casino will offer Roulette and now online casino players can also enjoy this game.  There are many variations of Roulette with online casinos offering animated games with great graphics as well as a live dealer option that allows players to enjoy the convenience of playing online combined with the atmosphere of a real casino.

There are traditional Roulette variants such as European, American and French Roulette.  There are also Roulette variants aimed specifically at online casino players and include Mini, Live, Multi Wheel, Marvel and Triple Bonus Spin Roulette.

American and European Roulette

The most popular versions offered to Canadian casino players are American and European Roulette.  American Roulette is found mostly in American casinos while European Roulette is popular around the world.  The difference between the two variants is that American Roulette has a single and a double zero and the European only has one zero.  Both variants have 1 to 36 numbers, but the order is different.  European Roulette is more popular among Canadian casino players as the house edge is significantly lower than the American version.  The extra two zeros in American Roulette means there is an additional number to place a bet on.  The odds for all the bets in both the variants are the same, but the extra number in American Roulette changes the probability and increases the house edge that you would find in an Australian online pokies game.

Some of the bets are different and are only offered in either of the variants.  The main difference is the extra double zero which players can bet on with the American variant and what is known as the number five bet which is a bet placed on the zero, double zero and numbers 1,2 and 3.  With the European variant there are extra bets known as racetrack bets and these cover a particular section or a particular set of numbers on the wheel.

French Roulette

French Roulette is very similar to European Roulette as both do not have the double zero and the bets are all the same.  The difference is that the layout of the betting board is different, but is still played in the same way.  French Roulette has two additional rules, La Partage and en prison rules.  These two rules are not compulsory so will not be offered at all online casinos.  The La Partage rule allows players to get up to half their bet back if they have placed an even money bet and the zero comes up.  The en prison rule lets players use the bet for the next spin instead of giving them back half their bet.  If the player wins with their next spin they will get their bet back but without the winnings.  If the player loses they will lose both their bet and winnings.

Roulette Variants for Online Casinos

Mini Roulette is a miniature variant of Roulette and has 6 red, 6 black and one zero.  The payouts are also less and can be a fun variant.  Live Roulette is played using a webcam and offers players a real Roulette experience with a live croupier.  Multi Wheel Roulette has multiple wheels and there are also many variants of this game.  Many online casinos will offer this variant for free so it’s a great practice option. Marvel roulette is themed Roulette based on Marvel characters and features an extra Marvel slot and players get a bonus round which is a slot game with Marvel reels.  Triple Bonus Spin has a bonus slot and if players land on it they receive three free spins.
